St Mary the Virgin, Newington

St Mary the Virgin has been the home to a worshipping community from the village and the surrounding area for nearly 1000 years. We are committed to building an open, welcoming and prayerful Christian Community today.

Everyone is welcome at any of our Sunday services. If you are coming with children, a service for all ages on the  4th Sunday of the month is particularly suitable. Our Communion services are open to everyone.

On the 1st, 3rd and 4th Sundays there is always a choir, who welcome new members. We have a keen bellringing group, which includes both adults and young people, who ring most Sundays and at special events.

Our services normally follow this pattern through the month

1st Sunday  9:30am  Sung Communion

2nd Sunday 9:30am  Sung Communion

3rd Sunday  9:30am  Sung Communion

4th Sunday  8:00am  Said Communion

10:30am Morning Praise Service (informal service for all ages)

5th Sunday  (to be announced - various special services around the benefice)

We have a wonderful Friends of St Mary's group, who contribute to the costs of maintaining this ancient and beautiful building.

ST MARY’S CHURCH BUILDING WORKS FINISHED!

We have now completed (except for a little tidying up) repairs highlighted in the Quinquennial Report of 2008 to replace the guttering, down pipes, put in new drainage runs, replace damaged north aisle roofing timbers and tiles and some high level masonry repairs.

It was financed by our Restoration Fund, assisted by English Heritage, Friends of St Mary's, various grants and assorted fund-raisers: quiz nights, a barn dance, a chamber orchestra concert, buy-a tile, and a Restoration Draw.

We completed Stage One in December 2011, and Stage Two in December 2012. The total cost was £127,088, but hopefully we can re-claim around £19,500 vat.
